Google brings Gemini AI to 250 million vehicles with Android Auto integration

Google is taking a major step in in-car technology by integrating its Gemini AI assistant into more than 250 million vehicles running Android Auto. Announced during The Android Show ahead of Google I/O 2025, the update is set to transform the driving experience by enabling natural, voice-driven conversations between drivers and their vehicles.

Enhancing the driving experience with conversational AI

With Gemini now embedded directly into Android Auto, drivers can perform a range of tasks—from sending messages and managing emails to finding restaurants and engaging in extended conversations—without reaching for their smartphones. The AI assistant supports over 40 languages and remembers user preferences, allowing for more personalized and efficient interactions.

A standout addition is the “Live” feature, enabling context-aware, dynamic conversations that can assist with complex queries on the go, providing a more intuitive and seamless driving experience.

Expanding Gemini across the Google ecosystem

This move is part of Google’s wider effort to expand Gemini AI across its ecosystem, including smartwatches, TVs, and extended reality (XR) devices. The goal is to create a cohesive, AI-powered experience across all Google-enabled platforms.

Mixed reactions from users

While the integration promises increased convenience and productivity, early user feedback has been divided. Many welcome the hands-free functionality and improved in-car experience, but concerns have been raised around AI reliability and data privacy, especially given the sensitive nature of in-car interactions.

The rollout of Gemini within vehicles is expected to begin in the coming months, with more details to be shared during the upcoming Google I/O 2025 event.
